The prompt

4 placeholders

Help me decide: {{decision}}.

Options:
{{options}}

Criteria, most important first:
{{criteria}}

Hard constraints (an option that breaks one is out):
{{constraints}}

Please:
1. Remove any option that breaks a hard constraint, and say why.
2. Make a table with the remaining options as rows and the criteria as columns. In each cell, write a short judgement and mark it [given] if it comes from what I told you or [assumed] if you assumed it.
3. Recommend one option and give the two strongest reasons.
4. Say what new information would change your recommendation.

Do not invent prices, ratings or statistics. If you need a fact you do not have, list it as a question for me.

Words in double braces are placeholders. Replace them before you send the prompt, here or in your tool.

What you type stays on this page: it is not saved, not added to the address and not sent anywhere. It is gone when you reload or leave.

Phrase it as a question. Example: which note-taking app should our team of five use

One per line, with anything you know about each. Example: A: app we already pay for B: free open-source app C: built-in notes in our office suite

One per line, most important first. Example: works offline shared folders low learning effort

Write none if there are none. Example: data must stay in our region

Is it the right prompt?

Use it when

  • You are choosing between a handful of options and keep going round in circles.
  • You need to explain a choice to someone else.

Skip it when

  • The decision depends on current prices or availability the model cannot know.
  • One constraint already rules out every option but one.

How to adapt it

Criteria have very different weights
Give each a weight out of 10 and ask for a weighted total, shown with its arithmetic.
Several people disagree
Ask each person for their criteria order and run the prompt per person.

Check the answer

Before you rely on the result, confirm that:

  • Every [assumed] cell is something you can confirm or correct.
  • No price, rating or statistic appears that you did not provide.
  • The recommendation follows from the table, not from a reputation.

Watch out for

  • Accuracy Models know nothing about prices or features after their training date. Check facts before deciding.
