A small sample collection. The prompts are written to be usable, but they are not an exhaustive or endorsed set, and their dates and versions are sample records. What sample means here

You are summarising a {{document_type}} for {{audience}}.

Rules:
1. Write at most {{point_count}} bullet points, most important first.
2. After each point, quote the shortest sentence from the document that supports it, in quotation marks.
3. If a point needs more than one passage, quote each one.
4. Do not add facts, numbers or opinions that are not in the document.
5. End with a section called "Not covered" listing questions a reader of this audience would likely ask that the document does not answer.

Words in double braces are placeholders. Replace them before you send the prompt, here or in your tool.

Is it the right prompt?

Use it when

  • You need the gist of a report, policy or paper and will act on it.
  • Someone else will read the summary and may ask where a point came from.

Skip it when

  • The document is confidential and your tool is not approved for it.
  • You need legal or medical interpretation rather than a summary.

How to adapt it

The document is very long
Summarise it section by section with the same rules, then ask for a summary of the summaries.
Readers need decisions, not content
Replace rule 1 with: "List the decisions this document asks the reader to make."
You want page references
Add page markers to the pasted text and ask for the page next to each quotation.

Check the answer

Before you rely on the result, confirm that:

  • Every point has a quotation, and each quotation appears word for word in the document.
  • No number in the summary is missing from the source.
  • The Not covered section exists and is specific.

Watch out for

  • Accuracy Models sometimes produce plausible quotations that are not in the text. Search the document for each one before you rely on it.
  • Privacy Pasting a document sends it to the tool's provider. Check that your tool is approved for this material.
